New SMO merch! Sleepytime Gorilla Museum!

We have new shirts and stickers available on bandcamp.

I'm also thrilled to share that we'll be opening for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum at Mohawk on 3/30!  Tickets here

Here's a cover of Cardiacs - Stench of Honey recorded by myself and Leila Henley, Peter Stopschinski, David Bodie, Kim Abrams, and Pat Heally!

I contributed guitar and wrote music for several of the tracks on Nick Prol's new album.  We started collaborating on a project in 2019 that was supposed to be "Voivod meets Captain Beefheart"(!) but I got busy with other things.  He ended up including those tracks on this fantastic new Proletarians album.  It also features members of The Mercury Tree, Dave Newhouse from The Muffins, and Kavus Torabi and Bob Drake provide narration.  The CD also comes with a book, which I'm looking forward to checking out.  I think the whole album came out fantastic and I'm happy to have been involved with it.

My newest (and biggest!) project Egg Helmet Ensemble: Inner-world Music will be broadcast on December 20th at 8pm.  Featuring Stop Motion Orchestra + members of Austin's creative music community (Bob Hoffnar, Henna Chou, Seetha Shivaswamy, Alan Retamozo, James Brinkley, Braedon Avants, and Ben DeGain) playing new music composed by yours truly. After the music there will be a Q&A where I will discuss the project and answer any questions.

This project is supported by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin Economic Development Department.

I played a few guitar solos on my old friend Wes' experimental/metal/zeuhl/prog/? album:

I played guitar on this cover of the Cardiacs tune Fiery Gun Hand with some folks from bands I really like (Time of Orchids/Kayo Dot/Brown Whornet!).  Trying to recreate the crazy guitar solo from the original (a studio creation made out of several takes) was a fun challenge.

Stop Motion Orchestra - Ugly Numbers EP (2012)

Here is the recently rediscovered first Stop Motion Orchestra recording from 2012 recorded at Nicholas Taplin's house.  I decided to scrap it at the time and eventually recorded Instant Everything myself, but I found it enjoyable to revisit.  We actually recorded a full album including several tunes which ended up on Instant Everything! but these tunes disappeared with the next lineup of the band.

Chasing Sound

I am on the latest episode of Austin music podcast Chasing Sound! I did a long interview sandwiched between some spacey improvisations with hosts Andrew Noble and Kirk Duval. You can check it out here: http://www.chasingsound.net/episodes/episode-46-mo-ha-dev

New Terraformation track

Terraformation (Mohadev & Ben DeGain) have a new album in the works, and we took a break to record this track. Its a cover of a 7shades tune, and is part of a compilation, the sales of which go to raise money to help cover medical expenses for Tim Smith (Cardiacs). We are proud of this track, the album and remix compilation are great, and I can’t imagine a better cause:

March 31, 2014

Stop Motion Orchestra is working on our debut album, which will hopefully be released some time this year. I tried to make this preview under a minute, but 1'30" isn't bad:

Karda Estra - Mondo Profondo

July 18, 2013

In addition to the new Terraformation album (see 'Releases'), Benjamin DeGain and myself also made contributions to the new Karda Estra album, Mondo Profondo. We both played on 'Mondo Profondo 2,' but I can unreservedly recommend the whole album, and the CD comes coupled with the fantastic 2011 release 'New Worlds.'

Impossible Map

June 26, 2012

Experimental rock band Impossible Map now has its own website, where I'll be posting audio, video, and images regularly. Impossible Map is Steve Smith - sampler/synth, David Beck - drums, Eric McFarlin - bass, Mohadev - guitar, plus various guests.

New Terraformation album finished!

Feb 12, 2012

The fourth Terraformation album is recorded and mixed, and we are currently working out the release details (hopefully it will be available as a CD and download before the summer). In addition to the core lineup of myself (Mohadev) and Ben DeGain, we have several of our favorite musicians contributing this time around. I'm not sure how objective I can be about the way this album sounds at this point, but I think it is simultaneously more subdued/introverted and more experimental. Here is unmastered track from the album:

New Earth Size Diamonds in the works

Feb 01, 2012

I'm currently working on a follow up to In A Shrinking Forest. It should be completed some time in March April, and will definitely be available before the summer. Ben DeGain (Terraformation) will be playing drums, and Eric McFarlin (Ugly Numbers) is on board to play bass! There will likely be a few other guests, and possibly vocals (a first for Egg Helmet).

Also, here is a short clip from the film I scored this past fall:
